You need to keep yourself up to date by studying all the time.

R-san, can you briefly describe your job?

As an IT Technician, I perform system design and troubleshooting for audio & video equipment and wi-fi network as well as provide support to the Project Manager and other coordination works.

I am mainly engaged in configuring video conference systems for classrooms and conference rooms on the US Military Bases and wi-fi equipment for customers at movie theaters and resort & recreational facilities. Each work site has different communication environment, so I need to make adjustment and properly program the device we install to optimize its functions and performance.

IT Technician is a type of job that requires you to constantly study to enhance your knowledge and keep yourself up to date on the latest information. I often need to remain on site longer due to work schedules. Even in such circumstances, I try to make use of my time in office for studying and performing tests in the workspace (lab).

It’s a Job that elevates “what I like” to the level of “what I do as my profession”.

When do you find your job enjoyable and at what kind of moment do you get a sense of accomplishment in working?

I am always interested in something new. So, I enjoy learning about new technology and innovation and working out creative solutions on my own. My workplace is a perfect environment for someone who loves IT or anything related to technologies. When there are new ideas that emerged at my work site or any useful solutions developed by my colleagues, I would also try them at home.

In my case, I feel as if I am practicing what I do for hobby in the field of my profession, and my colleagues feel the same way. I enjoy what I’m doing for my job, but this never means I don’t take my job seriously. I find what I’m doing extremely valuable. It’s a job that elevates “what I like” to the level of “what I do as my profession”. By doing so, you are providing support to your customers for their benefits and satisfaction.

Fun and Vibrant office that resembles to a college in the U.S.

Once you joined AEC, what kind of impression did you have about the Company?

In my previous job, I was working for a design company owned by a Japanese. The work was operated based on Japanese business culture and traditions. The workplace was friendly, but it was very quiet, partly due to the nature of design works. AEC, on the contrary, has an extremely vibrant atmosphere. I got used to this job quickly, because I had experienced corresponding with the US Military in exchanging documents. The work environment here at AEC resembles to the campus environment of the university I went to in the United States. It’s diverse and multicultural with a variety of people from different countries, and I enjoy working in such environment each day.

What do you like about working at AEC?

I think AEC offers a perfect environment for those who are interested in learning other countries’ cultures and languages. Even if you have very little experience at the beginning, you will have many opportunities to learn and improve your skills by working at AEC.

I am still in my second year at AEC, but now I can single-handedly take care of many tasks that I had no experience when I joined the Company. Although you’ll face many tasks that require advanced skills, and you’ll need to work hard to be able to perform them, we have an environment that is very supportive for your growth and improvement.

Another positive thing about working here is that you can take paid leaves quite flexibly. My team understands how important it is for its members to take a leave once a while, and all of us are more than happy to make up for each other’s absence. I always feel grateful for this supportive team environment.

I want to move on to the next step as an IT Technician…

What kind of work would you like to do in the future?

A variety of job options are available as future steps for IT Technicians – some may choose to work as an engineer applying expertise at a more advanced level, some may move on to hold managerial positions, and some technicians would leave the current job to seek opportunities elsewhere. I don’t think such option is a bad choice, but I like working for AEC in its comfortable environment. So, I would rather not leave, and instead I prefer to seek a position where I can build my career here over a long time span.
An ideal work-setting for me is the atmosphere I experienced in my university years. When I was in the university, I was working part-time for an on-campus lab providing technical and troubleshooting support for students and professors. Its office was always wrapped in a vibrant atmosphere. If we faced any difficulties we would do research, and we used our free time in the office studying among ourselves. Whenever we received reports of technical problems, we would get on a cart to move around on campus and head to the site. Such work setting may appear a bit too school-like, but it would bring us joy and great learning experience while helping others. That’s the kind of team environment I aspire to create.

We welcome anyone who is eager to work with efficient mindsets.

What kind of person would be a perfect fit to work in your team, R-san?

I think someone who is eager to work and able to think efficiently will make a great member of our team, and it would be perfect if this person has a good sense of humor. Even if you’re not confident at the current level of your skills, there’s no problem as long as you’re willing to learn and improve your skills.

That being said, our work involves coordination, and you will need to prepare and submit documents in English, and on many occasions, you have to communicate with clients in English. For this reason, you will need certain level of English skills. If you know English and are interested in IT matters, I believe you will enjoy this job. Members of our team are also the kind of people who enjoy anything in the job, and you will learn a lot from them. Once you’re a member of the team, you’ll be amazed how fast the time flies every day.
