Taking pride in working for the Maintenance Department contributing to AEC’s core functions

N-san, can you briefly describe your job?

I work at the HVAC-R Section of the Maintenance Department providing maintenance service on Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning facilities. My duties mainly involve conducting inspection of air conditioning devices by routinely visiting schools located on US Military Bases: we check for any defects in the system such as dirt on air-filters, gas leakage, or corrosion and perform repair works if necessary.

Many people might think that AEC’s core function is construction work, but in fact, the company was originally founded as a contractor specialized in maintenance of air conditioning facilities. I am so proud of working as a member of the department that has always supported the Company’s core business.

It is a kind of job that requires you to understand both broadly and deeply (not just breadth alone).

When do you find your job enjoyable and at what kind of moment do you get a sense of accomplishment in working?

You need a wide range of knowledge in performing AEC’s maintenance work on HVAC-R facilities. Not only does it involve performing routine inspection and repair on air conditioning devices, but it also requires you to understand in great depth about piping, plumbing and electricity, otherwise you cannot get the job done. Not just getting acquainted with a broad range of things while sacrificing the depth of your knowledge, you need to understand both broadly and deeply. For this, you need to keep learning and expand your knowledge continuously. This is what makes my job challenging and enjoyable at the same time.

There is no need to mention that work cannot get accomplished by one person. We need to work with our colleagues as a team by helping one another, seeking advice from our seniors and experts, and exercising knowledge in our respective fields of expertise. By doing so, it gives me a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when we succeed in resolving issues.

“Call AEC!” – it was a moment I had a glimpse of how much they trust AEC.

Why did you choose to work at AEC?

In my previous job, when I visited a family of US military personnel to repair the air conditioner at their residence, a little girl who happened to be on the spot said, “Call AEC!”. I was able to perform the job without issues, but it was a moment that I realized how much they trust AEC for its services. It was so great that it was a norm to contact AEC if anything happens with their air conditioners.

When I turned 40 and was seeking new career path, I remembered that remark and decided to apply for a position at AEC, thinking it would be best to improve my skills at a well-trusted company which has successful records. To be honest, because of my own age, I was a bit afraid of making such great a decision. Nonetheless, my desire prevailed, and I decided to go ahead and apply.

Team where you can work by asking “for whose benefit we are providing services on air conditioners”

Once you joined AEC, what kind of impression did you have about the Company?

I found AEC a very interesting company with interesting members from various countries around the world showing different ways of thinking. In terms of work environment, I was pleasantly surprised to see how each member is supportive and ready to lend a helping hand transcending the boundaries between teams, sections or departments. We keep asking ourselves “for whose benefit are we providing services on air conditioners?”, and we are unified in the common goal of serving the interests of our clients. With this in mind, we all endeavor to help and be considerate of one another. I believe such work ethics contributed to the development of a sense of solidarity, which manifests teamwork and unity that we enjoy in our workplaces.

Supportive work environment for keeping work-life balance

What do you like about working at AEC?

AEC offers a supportive work environment for keeping work-life balance. This is particularly helpful for me since I am working while raising my children. I work for regular hours except in the case of irregular situations, and I am especially grateful that I do not need to work on weekends.

Since AEC is a sponsor of the Ryukyu Golden Kings, I had a chance to win 4 tickets for myself and my family members to watch their basketball game. I had a really good time watching the game, and it made me proud to see AEC’s company logo shown on the rings. Through such moments, I developed my self-awareness as a member of the company, and it makes me more committed to contributing to its business.

N-san, what kind of person would be a perfect fit to work in your team?

We welcome someone who is optimistic and forward-looking. Here’s what I think. If you are eager to learn and understand, you will get new findings. If findings become a habit, you will acquire skills. If you practice and improve your skills, your skills will become a routine. When your skills become a routine, then you are a professional. To take an important first step, you need to be optimistic and forward-looking. I would like to work with someone that is ready to tackle challenges and willing to become a professional and make a great contribution to the company.

It never hurts trying! Just venture into new things!

Can you leave a message to potential job applicants?

If you are forward-looking and ready to learn new things, you are ready to get involved in our tasks. Just keep in mind that you have nothing to be afraid of. Our company has a friendly atmosphere and comfortable work environment.

You might think that you need to be fluent in English to work at AEC, but you have nothing to worry about at the beginning. Although you will need to memorize technical terms in English through the course of work, you will get accustomed to using those terms quite naturally by working in the field. On top of this, you have your colleagues who are more than happy to support you. In the first stage, it will be enough if you can just say “Hello” with your smile. You should never hesitate in applying. Just keep yourself optimistic.
